RADIATION DAMAGE IN ZIRCONIUM, ZIRCALOY-2 AND 410 STAINLESS STEEL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4838708

An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties of Zircaloy-2. The test specimens were representative of the fully annealed state, cold worked 13%, and cold worked 25%. It was an additional purpose oi the investigation to obtain information on radiation hardening in Zircaloy-2 and Zr, and the embrittling effect of radiation on 410 stainless steel. Radiation hardening was found to anneal out of Zr and Zircaloy-2 at 250 to 400 deg C at activation energies of about 2.3 ev, and at about 200 to 400 deg C in the case of 410 stainless steel with an activation energy of 2.4 ev.
