INVESTIGATION OF THE PRESSURE BONDING OF ZIRCALOY-2 TO STAINLESS STEEL BY INDENTATION
Factors governing pressure bonding were investigated with a series of tests at room temperature and at 500 deg F using 1/8-in. thick sheet material. The test assemblies consisted of Zircaloy-2 sheet, annealed or cold worked and autoclaved, and either Type-410 Stainless Steel, hardened and tempered, or Type- 304 Stainless Steel, annealed. The investigation ineluded a limited study of various surface preparations and the effect of specimen geometry on the bonding process. A number of bonded samples were subjected to thermal cycling and to diffusion heat treatments. The investigation showed that Zircaloy-2 can be consistently bonded to Stainless Steel if the faying surfaces are carefully prepared and a certain minimum deformation is produced in the parent metals. The strength of the pressure bonded sheet assemblies was controlled by the thickness of the parent metals immediately adjacent to the bonded area. (auth)
