THE DIFFUSION LENGTH OF THERMAL NEUTRONS IN POISONED WATER

Journal Article · · J. Nuclear Energy, Pts. A and B. Reactor Sci. and Technol.
The diffusion length of thermal neutrons has been measured in water poisoned with boron in amounts such that SIGMA /sub aB/ = 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 SIGMA /sub aH/. The data indicate that 1/L/sup 2/ >s is a linear function of SIGMA /sub a/ for pure water and the two weaker poisons. For the maximum pcison used, however, 1/L/sup 2/ departs from the straight line, revealing the presence of a spectral hardening effect. The value of the diffusion constant, D/sub 0/ = D/sub v/, calculated from the data, equals 37618 plus or minus 205 cm/sup 2//sec. Assuming that sigma /sub aB/ = 755 plus or minus 2b, sigma /sub aH/ is ca lculated to be 0.328 plus or minus 0.006b. In addition, the case of a non l/v absorber, cadmium is treated. (auth)
