A fuel element leak detector apparatus using an electrostatic precipitator is designed which is relatively compact and capable of operating under high pressure. The apparatus includes a precipitation chamber, means for feeding gas through the chamber, a detector, an endless wire extending through the chamber and detector on a pulley system, and means for moving the wire in steps from the chamber to the detector.
