THE STRONTIUM-90 CONTENT IN SOILS AND PLANTS OF THE TERRITORY OF THE DDR (in German)

The Sr/sup 90/ contamination of soils and agricultural foods was first determined in 1960 for the territory of the DDR. Samples were taken at places at which the Meteorological and Hydrological Service of the DDR had determined for some years the total radioactive fall-out. If sampling of agricultural products was not possible, corresponding samples from neighboring farms were taken. The Sr/sup 90/ poisoning of the soils varied from 4.7 to 23.1 mC/km/sup2/. Of the agricultural preducts, the grass samples showed the highest and the potato samples the lowest Sr/sup 90/ content in the solids. For grass and fodder samples, the known negative relationship between the Sr/sup 90/Ca ratio in the plants and the concentration of exchangeable Ca in the soil was satisfied. The Sr/sup 90/ uptake appears to be principally by the root system and less by the leaf surface of the plant. (tr-auth)
