In a gas cooled reactor provided with vertical channels in the moderator, several fuel elements are stacked in each channel. Each fuel element consists of a graphite cylinder sliding in the channels with a clearance of about 1.5 mm and a clad fuel rod supported in the graphite cylinder. The clearance is often sufficient to allow an appreciable leakage of moderator between the rod and the cylinder. In order to prevent or limit this, a series of annular radial protruding lugs are provided one after the other on the upper part of the outer surface of the graphite cylinder, the downstream edge of each lug being beveled.
