PLUTONIUM EXTRACTION PROCESS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4836955

A method is outlined for removing fission products and other materials from irradiated fuels. The essence of the method is the extraction of Pu in the 4+ oxidation state from an aqueous HNOs/sub 3/ solution of at least 7M acidity into an organic solution of an aliphatic secondary amine and thereafter stripping the Pu from the organic phase with a dilute HNO/sub 3/ solution. In the preferred embodiment of the method, Pu in the solution from the dissolution step is first reduced to 3+ and then oxidized to 4+ to prevent extraction of many contamninants. (D.L.C.)
