A safety rod is designed which is adapted to take up two positions, viz., total immersion in the reactor tank and entire withdrawal.from the tank. The rod is fixed to a cylinder slidable on a fixed piston and is dropped into the reactor under its weight. When it is to be lifted, a pressure higher than that in the reactor forces D/sub 2/0 from inside the piston and lifts the rod. (D.L.C.)
