THE RELATIVE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTIVENESS OF 22-Mevp X-RAYS, COBALT-60 GAMMA RAYS, AND 200-Kvcp X-RAYS. IV. DETERMINED BY EFFECTS ON THE IRON-59 UPTAKE IN RATS

A series of six simultaneous experiments was conducted with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays and 22-Mevp and 200-kvcp x rays. Fe/sup 59/ was injected at the optimum time for each dose level, and the l5-day uptake thereafter was determined. The effectiveness of the radiations was compared by choosing a comparable effectiveness level (ED/sub 50/) on the linear response curve. The average of six experiments yielded RBE values of 0.85 for Co/sup 60/ gamma rays versus 200-kvcp x rays, 0.84 for 22-Mewp x rays versus 200-kvcp x rays, and 0.99 for 22-Mevp x rays versus Co/sup 60/ gamma rays, based on the absorbed dose to soft tissue.
