ATOMIC-BOMB RADIATION CATARACT IN NAGASAKI

Journal Article · · Nippon Ganka Gakkai Zasshi (Japan)
OSTI ID:4834629
Radiation cataract was found in 432 (57.37%) out of 753 cases chosen from the surv'pv'ors within 1800 m from the hypocenter of the explosion at Nagasaki and in 463 (45-48%) out of 1010 cases within 2400 m. The major findings were; (1) punetate opacities in the segmentation zone; (2) vacuopes in the cortex, (3) subcapsular plaque-like opacities at the posterior pole, and (4) tuft- like opacitics in the cortex of the posterior pole. The changes of l and 4 were virtually specific findings of atomic-bomb radiation; 2 was generally always observ'ed in other types of cataracts, 3 was also physiologically observed. The degree of severity of lentpcular opacity was proportional to atomic bomb radiation dosage receiv'ed The opacitnes remain stationary without subsequent aggravation.
