EXPERIMENTAL RADIATION CATARACTS. II. HISTOLOGICAL STUDY OF EXPERIMENTAL ROENTGEN-RAY CATARACT
The rabbit's eye was irradiated with 45-2000 r (160 kv) and examined. Ev'en with 45 r x-ray cataract was clinically or histologically observed in the eye; the changes were those of abnormal immigration of the nucleated juvenile fibers into the posterior cortex and posterior subcapsular pseudo-epithelia; small balloon cells in the posterior cortex appeared with irradiation of more than 200 r, and with irradiation of 500 r or more solitary pseudo-epithelia were observed beneath the capsule, near the posterior pole. Clinically the findings were posterior subcapsular ppaquelike opacities, which always appeared in atomic bomb radiation cataract, On the rabbit's lens the opacities produced by irradiation of 600-900 r sometimes regressed slightly both clinically and histologically over a long period. ln the lens with irradiation of 900 r, radioaetive dysfunction was still observed in the juv'enile undifferentiated fiber zone ev'en 3 years after the irradiation, Thus a variation of x-radiation energies in the range from 80 to 160 or l80 kv (800 r) seemed to have no influence on cataractogenic effectiveness.
