Measurements of the variations in electrical conductivity as a function of composition is a sensitive method of detecting chemical reactions between oxide components and also structural changes such as the formation of various types of solid solutions. Since the electrical conductivity is also effected by other factors, it is advisable to employ supplementary data such as the degree of shrinkage on sintering in order to complement the electrical conductivity data. The electrical conductivity increases as long as the number of lattice defects is not too large, and begins to decrease when the interaction between defects is sufficiently great. Thus, maxima in the electrical conductivity are observed at l5 to 25 mol% metal oxide for systems in which solid solutions are formed such as ZrO/sub 2/-MgO, ZrO/sub 2/-CaO, CeO/-MgO, CeO/sub 2/-CaO, CeO/sub 2/-SrO and CeO/ sub 2/-ZrO/sub 2/-CaO. Structural changes observed in these systems by a change in electrical conductivity are corraborated by observations on the degree of shrinkage after sintering. (TTT)
