THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF HOMOGENEOUS CERAMIC FUELS. Summary Report

Studies were made on the formation of face-centered cubic solid solutions in the UO/sub 2/- ZrO/sub 2/-CaO and UO/sub 2/-CeO/sub 2/ systems upon sintering. An extensive series of facecentered cubic solid solutions was produced by sintering UO/sub 2/ and ZrO/sub 2/ pre-stabilized in cubic form with 10 wt% CaO. Stabilization of ZrO/sub 2/ with l5 or 20 wt% CaO produces some CaZrO/sub 3/ which, however, reacts with UO/sub 2/ contents of 25 to 50 wt % to form part of the homogeneous solid solution. Single-phase UO/sub2/-ZrO/sub 2/- CaO pellets containing up to 25 wt% UO/sub 2/were found to have excellent thermal resistance. Density, shrinkage, and weight loss for selected compositions vacuum- sintered at l800 deg C and heated in argon and in air at l000 deg C were measured. UO/sub 2/CeO/sub 2/ systems containing 20 and 40 wt % UO/sub 2/ were also found to form single-phase face-centered cubic structures upon being sintered. (D.L.C.)
