THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF HOMOGENEOUS CERAMIC FUELS. Progress Report for Period June 1 through September 30, 1961

Phase relationshlp studies on the UO/sub 2/- ZrO/sub 2/-- CaO and UO/sub 2/-- CeO/sub 2/ systems were continued. Results for CaO-UO/sub 2/-- ZrO/sub 2/ systems indicated that the composition limits for the single-phase face-centered cubic region are similar for both hydrogen- and argon-sintered specimens after isotherrnal anneals in argon. Studies of the UO/sub 2/-- CeO/sub 2/ system indicated a single phase face-centered cubic region for air-fired samples containing up to 21 mole % UO/sub 2/. Above this UO/sub 2/ content, there appeared to be two facecentered cubic phases. The construction of a high- temperature x-ray diffractometer specimen holder was eompleted. Thermal conductivity measurements on the systems were completed. Forty-two day corrosion tests in 360 deg C degassed water were also completed. All samples showed a high initial corrosion rate which was greatly reduced as testing time was increased. Thermal performance tests were carried out. (M.C.G.)
