A method is given for producing graphite of increased density compared with graphite made by conventional methods from mixtures of coke particles and pitch. The method comprises the steps of forming an intimate mixture of artificial graphite powder (dia. less than 300 mu ) and fine carbon black (average dia. = 0.3 mu ) in a 2 to 1 or 3to 2 proportion, incorporating the mixture into approximately -20% of a carbonizable binder, e.g., tar pitch or furfuryl alcohol, shaping the plastic mass, baking the mass to convert the binder to carbon, and graphitizing the baked mass.
