A fast simple method for ultrahigh vacuum (in German)

A simple method for obtaining ultrahigh vacuum is presented. lt is based on the astonishingly high getter effects of silicon monoxide evaporating in high vacuum. Starting with a usual high vacuum, a glass apparatus can be evacuated to 10-9 Torr wlthin a few minutes without heating the apparatus. The quantity of SiO evaporated was so low that the walls of the tube remained unclouded. Similar evacuations can be made in metal chambers. It was concluded that the pressure-decreasing effect of the SiO depends on the getter property of the compound and also on the gas release from the vessel walls caused by the cladding effect of the SiO layer.
