The constitution diagram of Mg--Gd alloys is similar to the constitution diagrams of magnesium alloys with La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Y. The Mg--Gd compound melts congruently at 865 deg C. Additions of Gd strengthen magnesium. The hardness of the alloy with 7 wt% Gd is 57 kg/mn/sup 2/. (R.V.J.)
