A LABORATORY STUDY OF GAMMA-RAY SPECTRA AT THE SURFACE OF ROCKS
A 100-channel gamma spectrometer was used to investigate the changes in gamma spectra resulting from variations in the thickness of radioactive mineral sources. Uranium, thorium, and potassium were studied separately in the form of prepared mineral aggregates and together in the form of large rock specimens. Rocks are shown to have distinctive gamma spectra that reflect their radioelement content. For common rocks, the intensity of gamma radiation from potassium predominates over that from either uranium or thorium and may exceed their sum. (auth)
