TUNGSTEN EXTRUSION PROGRAM. Second Interim Technical Report, April 10, 1961-August 24, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4833215

Several evaluation ingots of W-3% Mo were arc-melted utilizing various electrode preparation techniques, melt rates, and crucible sizes in an attempt to optimize as-cast ingot quality. These ingots were evaluated for purity, soundness, structure, and sidewall cleanup. In addition, several significant equipment modifications were made as a result of the melt studies during the development phase. Preliminary extrusions were made with two 6.55-in. dia. billets at 2.8: 1 reduction ratio and also 3.725-in. dia. billets at 11: 1 and 17: 1 reduction ratios. Extrusion equipment and accessory tooling are discussed in detail. (auth)
