LAVES-TYPE PHASES OF HAFNIUM

Journal Article · · Trans. Am. Soc. Metals
OSTI ID:4833074

The Laves-type intermetallic compounds HfV/sub 2/, HfCr/sub 2/, HfMn/sub 2/, HfFe/sub 2/, HfCo/sub 2/,HfMo/sub2/ ,and HfW/sub 2/,prepared from high purity iodide-grade hafnium, were investigated by powder diffraction techniques, HN/sub 2/, HfCo/sub 2/, HfMo/sub 2/, and HfW/sub 2/ are isomorphous with the MgCu/sub 2/ type of structure; HfMn/sub 2/, the MgZn/sub 2/of structure; and HfFe/sub 2/, the MgNi/sub 2/ type of structure. HfCr/dub 2/ is of the MgZn/sub 2/ type of structure except at 1200 deg C, where the MgCu/sub 2/ type of structure prevails. Line intensity measurements corroborated these findings. (auth)
