ON THE NATURAL RADIOACTIVITY OF SAMARIUM

Journal Article · · Ann. Acad. Sci. Fennicae, Ser. A, VI
OSTI ID:4832747

The natural radioactivity of samarium was stadied by measuring, using a grid-type ion chamber, the alpha spectra of natural Sm and of sources enriched in Sm/sup 148/ and Sm/sup 149/. A spectrum line width of 120 kev was obtained. The alplta energies (in Mev) and half lives (in years) of Sm/sup 147/, Sm/sup 148/ , and Sm/sup 149/ were found to be 2.20 plus or minus 0.02 and (1.17 plus or minus 0.05) x 10/sup 11/, 2.14 plus or minus 0.03 and (l.2 plus or minus 0.3) x10/sup 13/, and 1.84 plus or minus 0.05 and (4 plus or minus 2) x l0/sup 14/ , respectively. Alpha-decay systematics of the rare-earth nuclides is briefly discussed. (L.N.N.)
