THERMONUCLEAR REACTOR AND METHOD OF INITIATING AND SUSTAINING A THERMONUCLEAR REACTION

A method is outlined for initiating and sustaining a thermonuclear reaction in an evacuated reaction chamber for economical power generation. The method comprises 1) forming a magnetic field by two magnetic mirror regions spaced apart axially and having a mirror ratio of at least 3.5 to 1, 2) initiating a hot plasma within the magnetic field, 3) increasing the field strength and simultaneously feeding fuel to sustain the plasma, and 4) continuously altering the field configuration to gradually increase the distance between mirror rsgions to the desired operating distance, thereby filling the whole magnetic volume with plasma. Two embodiments of a thermonuclear reactor for putting into effect the method are described, one cylindrical and the other toroidal. (D.L.C.)
