SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF FAST NEUTRONS IN IRON (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Atomnaya Energ.
OSTI ID:4832647
Iron is one of the most suitable, cheapest and the most widehy used shielding materials but the neutron flux distribution in it is not sufficiently well known. This problem was studied experimentally in the BR-5 reactor. The spectrum of neutrons incident on the shield under study was determined by means of a 200-micron thick emuIsion. Comparison with the fission spectrum showed that at energies below 3 Mev the spectrum is somewhat softened. The prism used for the measurements consisted of performed bundled iron layers containing the detector. As fast neutron detectors S/sup 32/(n,p)P/sup 32/ and Al/sup 27/(n, alpha )Na/4 threshold indicators were used. The activties of the indicators as a function of the distance were thus determined. A Th/sup 232/ fission chamber and a threshold indicator Mg/sup 24/(n,p)Na/sup 24/ were used for energies of about 2 and 5 Mev. The asymptotic cross section data calculated from diffusion length values agree quite well with those obtained on the basis of the determination of the relaxation length: sigma Mg/sup 24/ = 1.87 barn and sigma / sub Al/27 = 1.87 barn.
