THE IONIZATION CHAMBER AS A MEASURING STANDARD FOR THE ACTIVITY OF BETA EMITTERS (in Russian)

The 4 pi counter measures beta activities from 10/sup -11/ to l0/sup -7/ curies; the organic scintillation counter measures activities up to l0/sup -5/ curies; a calorimeter can be used to measure activities of 0.0l curies and higher. An extrapolation ionization chamber can be used to fill the gap between 10/sup - 5/ and l0/sup -2/ curies. The electrodes are shifted to cause a change in ionization volume of V/sub 1/ - V/sub 2/and a change in ionization current of I/ sub 1/-I/sub 2/. With a specific activity of the source of q = 1 curie/g, a density of p == 1 g/cm/sup 3/and a source thickness of 0.1 mg/cm/sup 2/. calculations for S/sup 35/ (167 kev), W/sup 185/ (430 kev), Tl/sup 204/(765 kev), Y/sup 91/ (1560 kev) and P/sup 22/ (1690 kev) show that the dose strengths P in a volume V/sub 1/-V/sub 2/ at a solid angle of 0.024 are l2, 7, 4, 3.3, and 3 x 10/ sup-3/ rads/sec. The ionization current I/sub 1/-I/sub 2/ and the energy resolution can be increased by increasing the area to S = 10 cm/sup 2/. The average dose strengths are then calculated to be 0.12, 0.10, 0.09, 0.07, and 0.07 rads/sec. lf the thickness of the source is increased to 100 mg/cm/, the average dose strengths are calculated as 2.8, 9.5, l7, 27, and 28 rads/sec. Calculated values of I/sub 1/-I/sub 2/, show that the ionization current is increased by a factor of l000 to 2000 on increasing the area of the source from 0.1 cm/sup 2/ to 10 cm/sup 2/. On increasing the source thickness from 0.1 to 100 mg/cm/, the ionization current I/sub 1/ I/sub 2/increases by factors of 23, 92, 190, 380, and 395 for these isotopes. A thick source of l00 mg/cm/ and an area of 10 cm/ are recommended in order to obtain suitable ionization currents. (TTT)
