SWAGING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE. Quarterly Progress Report No. 5, July 1, 1961 to September 30, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4832393
The pre-compaction and cold swaging study of reactorlength rods were completed. An improvement in the precompaction apparatus efficiency was obtained and vibrated densities of over 86% theoretical were reached with fused UO/sub 2/. Cold swaged densities of 92 to 93% theoretical are obtainable with only 2 passes, a reduction of fuel area of less than 20%, and a relatively low tube elongation value (approx. 10%). The research will now be centered on the study of the uniformity and reproducibility of swaged bars. An investigation on the use of ceramic grade UO/sub 2/ powder for swaging-annealing experiments was initiated. The swaged UO/sub 2/ testing development is in progress. The experimental setup for thermal conductivity measurement was modified in order to perform runs at temperatures higher than 500 deg C. A study of the open porosity of swaged UO/sub 2/ was initiated by means of the pressurized Hg technique. Fragmentation of fused UO/sub 2/ during swaging is also being studied. (auth)
