SWAGING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE. Quarterly Progress Report No. 6, October 1, 1961 to December 31, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4817916
A series of 24 bars of reactor core length and 11 mm in diameter were fabricated with the vibro-swaging process previously developed. The fused UO/sub 2/ cladded in stainless steel was vibrated to approximately 84% T.D. and swaged with 2 passes for a total reduction of area of 16%. Densities of 93 and 92.5% of theoretical were obtained for tube wall thicknesses of 1.0 and 0.5 mm respectively. Reproducibility of density resulted in better than 0.5% T.D. Preliminary data on uniformity of density along the rod length also indicated a satisfactory value ( plus or minus 0.5% T.D.). Rod elongation was limited to a maximum 11% with final active length of (126 plus or minus 1) cm for the D.5 mm wall thickness. In swagingannealing experiments, densities up to 80% of theoretical were obtained with a mixture of fused and ceramic grade UO/sub 2/ (56 wt% of ceramic grade). Fragmentation of fused UO/sub 2/ during vibration and swaging and roughness of inner surface of cladding in contact with swaged UO/sub 2/ were studied. (auth)
