THE REACTION OF UF$sub 4$ WITH OXYGEN

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
UF/sub 6/ is a product of the reaction of UF/sub 4/ with dry oxygen above 600 deg C and at 800 deg C the dominating reaction appears to be 2UF/sub 4/ + O/sub 2/ + UF/sub 6/ + UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/. The over-all reaction is more complicated that this: U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ is also formed, and possibly U/sub 4/F/ sub 17/. Thermal decomposition of the UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ may also take place. In glass and silica, hydrolysis caused by residual moisture reduces the amount of UF/ sub 6/ which can be isolated. (auth)
