Experiments were run at 700 deg C in an equimolar molten mixture of NaCl and KCl with concentrations of 0.04 to 0.15 wt% of AgCl, PbCl/sub 2/, CdCl/sub 2/ and ZnCl/sub 2/. Molten aluminum was used as the anode, and tungsten wire 0.5 mm in diameter was used for the cathode. Contact between the catholyte and anolyte was made through a thin glass diaphram. A plot of lg STAi/sub k/i/sub s-i/sub k)! versus the cathodic polarization turned out to be linear. The term i/sub k/ is the cathode current, and is is the saturation current. A plot of the saturation current i versus concentration of metal in the fused salt showed a linear relationship. The half-wave potentials with respect to a chlorine electrode were found to be - 0.97 volts for Ag/sup +/, 1.01 volts for Pb/sup++, - 1.19 volts for Cd/sup ++/++, - l.44 volts for Zn/sup ++/, and - 2.18 volts for the deposition of Na and K. The calculated change in valence indicates that the metallic ion is reduced to the metal. (TTT)
