Under equilibrium conditions the polymorphic forms of the rare earth sesquioxides transform reversibly from onen form to the other. The sesquioxides of the largest ions, La, Ce, and Pr, exhibit the A-type structure, Nd2O3 exists both as A- and C-type, while Sm2, Eu2O3, Gd2O3, Tb2O 3, and Dy2O3 exist both as B- and C- type oxides. The remaining rare earth sesquioxides occur only in the C-type structure. The C to B transition temperature increases linearly with decreasing ionic radius of the rare earth cation.
