A hinge assembly is designed whereby heavy doors weighing up to several tons may be opened and closed with a manual force of a few kg. The assembly comprises hinges with opposed load-bearing surfaces arranged transversely to the axis of the hinges and means for supplying oil under pressure between the surfaces to form a lubricating layer. The oil pressure circuit may also be arranged to lock or unlock the door, e.g., by means of hydraulic jacks acting on locking bolts. (D.L.C.)
