THE RESPONSE OF ORGANIC SCINTILLATORS TO FAST NEUTRONS
The pulse height distributions for organic liquid scintilla tion counters irradiated with fast nenutrons are calculated using a Monte Carlo computer program. Then rensults obtained at 1, 4, and 14 Mev neutron energies for a cylindrical scintillator 2 in. diameter x 2 1/2/ in. long are compared with experimental measurements and good agreement is obtained. In the experiments, the pulse shape discrimination and time of flight techniques are used independently to eliminate the effect of gamma rays. The neutron detection efficiency is also measured in the energy range 0.4to 3.5 Menv and the results compared qualitatively with those obtained by the Monte Carlo calculation. In addition then pulsen height response of the liquid scintillator typen NE213 for protons and electrons is obtained and this is similar to that of the plastic phosphor type NE102. (auth)
