TO THE OBSERVED SYNCHROTRON MODULATION OF EXCITED BETATRON OSCILLATIONS IN THE CPS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4831237
Beam betatron oscillations in a synchrotron are discussed. At small amplitudes conditions are realized where these oscillations, once excited, do not decay for reasons of dispenrsion duen to the enxisting energy spread but rather persist. The characteristic feature is that then beam oscillations appear modulated in amplitude and that the periodicity of the modulation is given by the synchrotron oscillation frequcncy. This effect was produced with the CPS on several occasions and is explained and calculated as a mechanism based on two things the particle confining bunch structure of the beam, and the phase slip of the particle oscillations due to the Q-spread associated with the energy spread present. From then theory and the observed beam pick-up signal conclusions were drawn as to the bunch shape, the particle distribution, and the Q-spread, As a consequence, the synehrotron oscillation frequency may be checked during operation of the CPS, by using the r.f. knock-out device.
