EFFECT OF BETATRON OSCILLATIONS ON THE LONGITUDINAL STABILITY OF A COASTING BEAM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4132653
The stabilizing effect of radial betatron oscillations with regard to longitudinal bunching of an accelerator beam is investigated. A spread in particle circulation frequency arises from a spread in betatron oscillation amplitude. It is shown that this frequency spread is always sufficient to prevent bunching when the beam is coasting at the transition energy. At other energies a spread in canonical angular momentum also results in a frequency spread. A criterion is developed that places a lower limit on the sum of the squares of these two frequency spreads necessary for stability above the transition energy. (auth)
