A reactor safety and control device using BF/sub 3/ gas is designed for use during normal reactor operation. The BF/sub 3/ device has a container of liquid BF/sub 3/ connected to control tubes in the reactor zone; cooling means controls the temperature of the liquid and hence sets the BF/sub 3/ pressure in the control tubes. An embodiment of the BF/sub 3/ device is described in association with a D/sub 2/O test reactor employing scram control rods for emergency shutdown. (D.L.C.)
