ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS OF NEWBORN RATS AND ITS REMOTE SEQUELAE (in Russian)

A study was made to establish the specific features of the reaction of newborns to the effect of ionizing radiation. Experiments were staged on 1035 newborn rats. Nine hundred and five newborn rats were subjected to whole-body single irradiation on the lst to 2nd day of postnatal life; 130 rats served as control. The dose of irradiation was 50, 100, 200, 300, and 500 r. Irradiation of rats on their 1st to 2nd day of postnatal life leads to the development of radiation sickness which is most pronounced clinically with a dose of 500 r. In the survived animals. apart from retardation in weight gain, at remote periods following the irradiation there develop lordoscoliotic deformations of the thoracic portion of the spine, anomalies of the ribs with deformation of the chest, and disturbances of the ocular apparatus and generative organs.
