In view of their simplicity of construction and reliability the so- called gray-wedge'' type multichannel analyzers are widely used for nuclear investigations; the darkening of the photographic plate of the instrument is used to record and to store the information received. Their way of operation is similar to that of optical gray wedges which change the intensity of the lines in the direction of one of the axes but in this case a modulating voltage is employed to change the intensity of the electron beam within the cathode ray tube, resulting in suitable modulated lines on the screen. Experimental errors arising from the use of the instrument are due to uneven focusing sharpness at various points of the screen, the inhomogeneity of the fluorescent layer, and variation of the intensity of the electron beam within the tube as a result of changes in the input current. Great care must be taken to keep the photographic operations strictly constant. The instruments are very useful for the rapid determination of the shape and nature of spectra and the measurement of the peak energy. (TTT)
