TUBULAR REACTOR ELEMENTS AND METHODS FOR THEIR MANUFACTURE (in German)

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4830179
The invention concerns a tubular fuel element that consists of a cermet sandwich (for example, uranium oxide clad with stainless steel) which then also is clad. The fuel element is shaped to a round, oval, or polygonal (preferably six sided) tube. The cut edges are welded with or without electrodes or are soft or hard soldered and the tube interior is filled with moderating material. The cermet layer extends up to the cut edges and is welded flush with the cladding. The cermet layer is prepared first as a flat sheet, cut to dimension, and after bending together, is welded to a tube. Then the prepared tubular elements are provided with a gas tight coating by means of dipping, sputtering, or vacuum deposition. (J.S.R.)
