METHOD OF JOINING METAL CARBIDES TO METAL BASES

A method is given for joining UC and/or ZrC to a base of Ta or Nb. The method comprises heating the out-gassed metal base in contact with out-gassed graphite powder at 2000 to 2200 deg C for approximates 15 min to carburize the base surface, and sintering the compacted carbide with the carburized base under pressure at 1800 to 2200 deg C. An example of the method is given in which U/35 C- ZrC is joined to Ta in the fabrication of a fuel pin for a thermoelectric generator. (D.L.C.)
