THERMOCOUPLES WITH ELECTRODES OF REFRACTORY CARBIDES FOR USE UP TO 3000 C

Journal Article · · High Temp.
OSTI ID:4102788
The preparation of NbC with graphite and Nb and Zr carbide electrodes for use up to 3000 deg C is described. The NbC--ZrC couple has some advantages over the NbC-- C; in particular, its response is more stable, especially after homogenization firing, which gives rise to a region of solid solution of the carbides. Also, graphite rods show marked changes in thermoelectric behavior at 2700-3000 deg C, presumably on account of very slow, continuing graphitization, which is usually not completed during manufacture. The design of a thermocouple in which the current leads are joined to the electrodes by screws or via copper rings deposited electrolytically on the ends is given. (P.C.H.)
