NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4830059
A method is outlined for cladding fissionable and fertile reactor fuels in such a way that the disadvantages of conventional metal and ceramic claddings are avoided. ln this method, fuel particles or pellets are surrounded with a thermally setting material which evolves gas upon heating, the mixture is subjected to induction heating so that the fuel particles are preferentially heated to initiate gas evolution in their neighborhood, and a bubble or cell forms around each particle. Thus, a space is provided around each fuel particle to allow for volume increases due to thermal or radiation effects, and the matrix itself contains the fission products and hence requires no external cladding. The thermal setting material preferably is bituminous coking coal which passes through a plastic range at a temperature between 700 and 900 deg F with evolution of gases. (D.L.C.)
