NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENT WITH AN AUROGENEOUS MATRIX AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4792726
Spherical or tubular fuel elements are described which are composed of a matrix of graphitized coke with a great number of internal voids in which fuel granules are located, the fuel in each void having a substantially smaller volume than the void itself. The fuel elements are manufactured by mixing the fuel granules with a bituminous, cokefiable substance that during its cokefication develops gas and temporarily acquires a semi-plastic condition, e.g. bituminous coal or petroleum residues, preferentially heating the granules in the mixture and thus creating the voids around the granules throungh the local gas development, and continuing the heat treatmeni until the whole matrix is hardened. The local heating can be effected either by induction heating or by inducing fission in the granules. (NPO)
