METHOD FOR PREPARING LOW-ACTIVITY POLONIUM /cap alpha/-RAY SOURCES (in Russian)
Preparation of low-activity alpha sources by electrochemical or sublimation techniques usually presents serious experimental problems. In order to overcome these difficulties, a Po source was prepared by making use of the recoil of Po/sup 210/; a low-activity alpha -emitting preparation is formed by precipitating the Po atoms onto a supporting surface. As the number of Po atoms removed from the material is proportional to the time if the time is kept sufficiently short in comparison with the half life of the material, the specific activity of the new source is a function of the time of contact between the original preparation and the suppurting plate. The recoil atoms leaving the surface lose their electrons because of ionization and interaction with molecules and electrical methods may be used. Thus, a 100 v/mm charge was applied, using the supporting plate as the negative electrode. This method increased the rate of deposition by a factor of much more than 10, making it possible to prepare even high-activity sources within relatively short time periods. (TTT)
