A gas-cooled, graphite-moderated reactor is designed for eliminating or mitigating the positive reactivity coefficient due to temperature variation of the moderator. In this reactor, a portion of the coolant is reversed in flow at one end of the moderator and caused to flow, in contradirection to the flow through the moderator, in contact with the fuel elements. In this way, the moderator is more effectively cooled. (D.L.C.)
