Problems concerning contamination of sea-food supplies by radioactive materials are discussed particularly from the viewpoint of responsibilities of public health agencies. it is estimated that marine food products presently contribute less than t/1000th of the total intake of radioisotopes by the average resident of the United States and about t/200th of that of populations of other countries with high dietary sea-food consumption. Contributions of various sources to marine radioactivity are discussed, including that from fall-out from weapons testing, nuclear fuel processing plants, packaged wastes, and discharges from nuclearpowered ships and land-based reactors. Other problems considered are: monitoring of marine radioactivity, transport of radioactivity by ocean currents, assimilation and retention of radioisotopes by marine life, assay of radioactivity of sea-food products, and determination of permissible levels of radioactivity from sea-food sources.
