ZENITH ANGLE DISTRIBUTION OF EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS AT 8500m ABOVE SEA LEVEL

The zenith angles of the incident direction of air showers with particle density larger than 20m-/sup -2/ are observed at an altitude of 8500m. The measurement of the incident angle of each shower particle is made by the Fukui- Miyamoto discharge chamber (F.M. chamber), which is triggered by the coincidence pulse of scintillation counters. The whole experimental apparatus is mounted in the cabin of a DC-8 jet airplane. A total of 162 pictures of the F.M. chamber obtained during the flight experiment are analyzed, and the zenith angle distribution is obtained. The result shows that an intensity maxinnum exists at an angle of about 45- from the zenith. This result is in good agreement with the distribution expected from the altitude variation, and indicates that the intensity maximum of air showers, whose particle density is, on the average, several tens of particles per square meter, lies at an atmospheric depth of about 520 g.cm/sup -2/.
