DOSIMETRY OF CAESIUM-137 IN SHEEP

Journal Article · · Nature

The relationship between radiation dose to whole body and that to gonads from internally deposited Cs/sup 137/ was determined by dose measurements on young male sheep which were fed Cs/sip 137/ for up to 20 days. The body burdens and individual tissue doses were measured after the last Cs/sup 137/ feeding, and the sheep were then killed for Cs/sup 137/ determination in the tissues. The highest dose rates were found on the rectum surface; the highest tissue dose rates, in the kidneys. The results, however, confirm the soundness of the policy of using total-body dose as an estimator of Cs/sup 137/ radiation dose to the gonads. (D.J.C.)
