DOPPLER BROADENING OF THE He$sup +$ 4686 LINE IN ION TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS. Technical Memo No. 42

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4829304· OSTI ID:4829304
The measurement of the broadening of the He II complex line lambda 4686 A was widely used to estimate ion teraperatures in plasmas. Such broadening was assumed as a first approximation to arise only from the Doppler effect. An analysis is presented concerning the broadening as a function of both te perature and magnetic field. All other sources of broadening were assumed to be negligible. (auth)
