Ageing at the Cellular Level. Differential Effect of Transplanted Isogenic Lymphoid Cells from Old Versus Young Mice

Young adult mice of the (C57L x A/He)F/sub 1/ strain were exposed to a single sublethal dose of x radiation (500 rad), followed by injection of isogenic spleen cells from young adult donors or from old donors. Forty days later they were challenged by injection of parental A-strain spleen cells. None of the mice given isogenic spleen cells from young donors died but 14 out of 16 mice given the cells from old donors died. This suggests that spleen cells from old animals have a relatively low proliferative potential and are unable to repopulate the radiation-depleted lymphoid tissue of the host and resist the injection of immunologically competent cells.
