Normal mature female whlte rats (of the same litter) were irradiated with a single dose of 300, 600, and 1200 r and were examined histologically and histochemically. Adrenal gland The 300-r exposed group showed mild degeneration and destructive changes in the glomerular layer cells 3 hours after irradiation. These, however, returned almost to the former normal state at 3 to 7 days after irradiation. The 600-r exposed group showed more severe pathological changes with continuing increase in lipid granules at 3 to 7 days after irradiation. The 1200-r exposed group showed only fine granules in the zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata and 7 days later hardly any lipid granules were present in any of the cortical layers. The 1200-r exposed group showed, from 24 hours after irradiation, diffuse proliferation of the zona fasciculata and swelling of the cells. Thymus: The 300-r exposed group and thereafter the changes became more marked with lapse of time. The boundary between the cortex and the medulla became indistinct and a considerable decrease was noted in the thymus cells. In the 600 r and 1200 r exposed group, almost all thymus cells disappeared from the cortex and medulla and the reticular cells becanie degenerated with considerable hyperemia and congestion following the irration was considerable; RNA in each exposed group, however, remained unchanged. The ovary: In the 600 and 1200 r exposed groups, almost all primitive ovicapsules and graafian follicles were destroyed and the corpus luteum became atrophied to a small size with marked congestion, though in the 300-r group these effects were less severe. The 300 r group showed a tendency toward recovery from about 3 days after the irradiation. The 600 decrease. The pituitary glandi Each group showed slight degeneration of the cells, marked hyperemia, and congestion in the insterstltium and a tendency to a slight increas0 in the alpha -cells and a decrease in the beta -cells.
