SAFETY ASPECTS OF CALDER HALL REACTOR OPERATION
The safety aspects of the Calder Hall reactors are discussed. Only four main incidents have occurred in five years; all originated in the turbine or electrical plant. These incidents were: transformer trip, turbine valve failure, turbo-alternator pilot exciter fault, and lightning effect on grid. Modifications to the plant protection arrangements have since been incorporated. Over-all operation has shown that the safety measures have proven effective and that the highest safety standards are compatible with maintaining high output. The discussion concerns safety conditions and the revisions that have been made. The importance of the reactor operator in ensuring safety is shown. (N.W.R.)
